Ugly, Scary, dangerous!

In case you have never heard anything about female genital mutilation, this is your chance to get informed and help stop this cruel act. Female genital mutilation or simply FGM, is an act whereby, the clitoris is either cut completely or partially. Yes, I said CUT. It is illegal all over the world, but it still happens in great numbers. During the procedure after the clitoris has been cut, the lips of the female organ are sewn together, allowing only a very small hole, to allow urine or blood. The lips were again cut open on a girl's wedding day. Most parts of rural Africa, India, Asia and to my shock, Europe, still practice this brutality

In the olden days, a girl was supposed to be less aggressive sexually, and many communities believed that cutting the clitoris would suppress the sexual urge in a girl before marriage, some believed it would make her clean, and some did it as punishment for masturbation. This act leaves a girl traumatized both physically and psychologically. Bear in mind that, it is done without any anesthesia. Some die during the procedure from shock or excessive bleeding. Others die afterwards due to infections. Infections are so easily transmitted because, first of all, the "cutters", are old, uneducated women, who use the same blade for all the girls involved. Nowadays, they take cash for their services, but if they have to use a new blade, then their clients need to pay extra cash. Even in this time and era if HIV and other related diseases, they still remain in the dark. Apart from HIV, these girls can contract other killer diseases, like Human Papilloma Virus, which I wrote about in my previous hub.The cutters are so rooted into their culture, a culture that I say is a grave to bury women alive! A culture that robs a woman of her organs. They claim that their great great grandparents did it, their parents, them and so should their children.

It is painful to learn that, no country in the world accepts FGM refugees.. Many girls infact, are either flown from Europe, USA and the UK to be circumcised, or the cutter is flown in. Thank God for education that has enlightened people a bit and kept them busy. Years back, a girl was supposed to be married as soon as she healed from the circumcision. Am talking about an age as early as 8.

Now, the biggest problem comes when a girl begins her menstruation, because sometimes, the hole that was left is too small that blood cannot come out. This leads dangerous and complicated medical problems that only doctors can explain.

Please, create awareness and help stop this act!

I know there are organisations that have successfully traveled far and beyond to educate women and small girls in general. They build something like a "safe house" where girls can run to, trying to escape the act. Later, the organisations look for parents and press charges in courts. It helps.

I've heard of it, unfortunately, and think it's awful. But it's necessary that people now this is going on. Voting this Up and Interesting.

We were just discussing this last week in my human sexuality class! I can't believe that some cultures think that this sort of thing is necessary. It's not even that these people are just mean and cruel it is considered to be a very important part of their culture and a girl cannot become a "woman" without having this barbaric procedure done.

People should consider themselves very lucky to be born somewhere where things like this aren't practiced. After learning this I will never take being American for granted.

There is a really good fiction book I read in one of my classes that discusses FGM. It's called Efuru by Flora Nwapa.

I'm voting this up, I hope more people read it.

This is so sad and I can't believe this is still going on in the 21st century. I agree with TheHUG5 that we take being an American for granted and don't know how lucky we are to be able to express and find ourselves through our youth. Great hub!

I would say, never take the little pleasures of life for granted. Thank God it never happened in my family.

This practice is horrific. I agree with all of those that say they are grateful for having been born in America. We sometimes take the fact that we are free for granted, and don't compare it to the atrocities that other women around the globe have to face.

Sarah, my question to you is, what can we do to help? How can we, as women of America without a lot of cash resources, help prevent this and other sexist acts that take place all over the world?

If there is one thing that is difficult to eliminate in a society, it’s FGM. These things are taking hundreds of years for people to stop practicing them. The politics involved here are unpleasant and deadly.

The excuse people give for practicing FGM is that FGM prevents girls from being promiscuous. The real reason that is never mentioned is that FGM was borrowed from ancient Egypt and was initially meant to seal a woman so that only a particular man can have her. The other reason is that women should not have organs that ‘extend out’ like those of men, and men should not have ‘openings’ that look like those of women. It is because of this last reasoning that doctors are secretly working with civilized and cultured women in many countries (developed and developing) to have that clito thing trimmed.

There are three types of FGM – FGM type I, FGM type II, FGM type III, and that type III is the most barbaric type that one wonders why the world is still putting on a blind eye to this practice.

For an eyewitness description of type III operation in Somalia, you can check this link: http://www.nocirc.org/symposia/first/hosken.html if you are interested.

There isn't so much that a common man can do. NGOs however, have really helped in preaching against this godpel in some parts of Africa. In Kenya for example, there are many NGOs and statistics show that FGM has reduced considerably. If you have a friend, or a friend who knows another friend in deep rural Africa, just talk to them. Your advice may help someone.

@Ngureco, the procedure itself is more cruel than I thought. Digging with the fingernails? No wonder most of them get infections and some bleed to death.

Perhaps it would be important if you can research and find out the role some traditional midwives play, at the time of giving birth, on those who may have escaped going through FGM as young girls.

Unfortunately, FGM is not only confined to Africa but FGM is also being practiced in United States, Asia, Australia, France and England. Check this link, http://www.munfw.org/archive/50th/who2.htm , if you can.
